Self Portrait
In this session you are going to make a self-portrait, but don’t panic! The same approach and thinking should be applied here as with all the previous exercises, don't worry about how it looks and try to enjoy the process. The aim here is to express how you are feeling about yourself in a visual form, not to create a well-rendered drawing. Simply use your memory of how you look and/or how you feel to guide your drawing - no reference photos or mirror! You may wish to make this representational and somewhat realistic, or you may wish to go completely abstract and draw something that doesn’t resemble anyone’s face, let alone your own. Somewhere in the middle can work great, I enjoy scribbling away with a ballpoint pen for this or using a larger marker to doodle shapes to make up my face, get creative with it. Remember that the intention and expression of your emotions is what matters here and that you never have to share this with anyone if you don’t want to.
Optional Reflective Questions:
Look at your drawing for a little while. How does it make you feel to look at it?
How would you describe the expression of the face you have drawn? If you took a more abstract approach, what mood would you say your image evokes?
How was your mood going into this session? Would you say the self-portrait reflects that?
Do you feel that your image is trying to communicate something to you? If so, what is it?
I encourage you to try this for yourself first, but if you are stuck or don’t quite know what to do, here are some examples of what this might look like:
